MPI 2017 – Stop Planning Meetings, Start Designing Experiences

MPI’s decision to BLOW UP the typical meeting structure and encourage attendees to make changes started off a bit shaky.

The planning committee took a risk. The convention kicked-off at 6:30 p.m. with four keynote speakers for the opening general session. The program started late, ran over, saw an exodus of attendees, and angry social media posts before the second speaker had begun (with more filtering out over the next hour).

The opening reception and B-52s soon had everyone forgetting their aggravation and hunger; however, MPI took time to address the issues the next day, admitting to taking a risk and allowing us to learn from their experience.  Kudos to MPI, this was a true opportunity to learn with a first-hand example and they handled it with class.

The education was fantastic throughout the event – everything from re-designing your room set to new audio visual/internet trends, dealing with contracts to safety and security. The 2017 World Education Congress (WEC) featured many unique networking and relationship building opportunities: a living food wall, t-shirt splatter paint, dogs, meeting room of the future, the B-52s, Joan Jett, and even ferris wheel rides.

The Georgia Chapter created their own networking experiences from sitting together at meals and events to the Chapter Reception.

In short, WEC was a huge success with live learning experiences including an unexpected losing the feature keynote speaker last minute. MPI Leaders encouraged us to take risks, and showed that sometimes risks are successful while other times you might have to make tweaks. For example, when your conference involves meeting planners, one adjustment included a pop-up question and answer session.

I’m already looking forward to the EXPERIENCES MPI will create during next year’s conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mark your calendar for June 2-5, 2018.
